What Is the Difference Between Pending and Completed Transactions?

Pending transactions are still processing and may change before they become completed transactions in your account history.

What is a pending transaction?

A pending transaction has been approved but has not fully cleared your financial account.

Pending transactions commonly include:

  • Card purchases
  • Restaurant charges
  • Gas station holds
  • Hotel deposits
  • Car rental deposits
  • Online orders
  • Transfers
  • Payments

For example, a restaurant may first show a pending charge of $40. After the tip is added, the completed transaction may change to $48.

What is a completed transaction?

A completed transaction has finished processing through the merchant and your financial institution.

Once completed, the transaction normally shows its final:

  • Amount
  • Date
  • Merchant name
  • Category
  • Effect on your account balance

Completed transactions are generally used when Rankk calculates finalized spending totals and account history.

Why can a pending amount change?

A merchant may not know the final amount when the transaction begins.

For example:

  • A restaurant adds the tip later
  • A gas station places a temporary authorization hold
  • A hotel holds money for possible additional charges
  • A grocery delivery service updates the amount after substitutions
  • An online store adjusts the total when an order ships

The amount shown while pending may not be the amount you are finally charged.

Why can the merchant name change?

A pending transaction may first show:

  • A payment processor
  • A shortened business name
  • A temporary description
  • The merchant’s legal company name

After the transaction is completed, your financial institution may provide a clearer merchant name.

Why can a pending transaction disappear?

A pending transaction may disappear when:

  • It becomes a completed transaction
  • The merchant cancels the charge
  • The authorization hold expires
  • The payment is declined or reversed
  • The merchant replaces it with the final transaction

For example, a hotel may place a $200 pending hold when you check in. That hold may disappear after checkout and be replaced by the final hotel charge.

Why do I sometimes see two similar transactions?

You may briefly see both the pending transaction and its completed version.

This does not always mean you were charged twice.

For example:

  • Pending restaurant charge: $42
  • Completed restaurant charge with tip: $50

The pending $42 transaction should normally disappear after the completed $50 charge is fully processed.

Wait for the pending transaction to clear before reporting a duplicate.

Gas station authorization holds

Some gas stations place a temporary hold before the final fuel amount is known.

For example:

  • Pending authorization hold: $100
  • Final fuel purchase: $46

The $100 hold should normally disappear and be replaced by the completed $46 transaction.

The exact amount and timing are controlled by the merchant and financial institution.

Hotel and car rental holds

Hotels and car rental companies may place temporary holds for:

  • Deposits
  • Possible damage
  • Additional services
  • Fuel
  • Other charges

The hold may be larger than the final purchase and can remain pending for several days.

Rankk cannot remove or release the hold. Contact the merchant or financial institution when you need information about its timing.

Online orders

An online order may remain pending until it ships.

The merchant may:

  • Charge each item separately
  • Adjust the total
  • Cancel part of the order
  • Replace the pending transaction with several completed transactions

Compare the completed transactions with the final receipt or order history.

How pending transactions affect spending

Pending transactions may appear in recent spending views so you have a more current picture of your activity.

Because the transaction can still change, your totals may update after it becomes completed.

For example:

  • Pending restaurant amount: $60
  • Completed amount: $72
  • Spending total adjustment: $12

Recent spending totals should be treated as changeable while transactions are still pending.

How pending transactions affect safe to spend

A pending purchase may reduce the amount available for other spending even before it becomes completed.

Rankk may consider available pending information when estimating safe to spend.

Because the final amount can change, the estimate may also update later.

How long can a transaction stay pending?

Many transactions finish processing within a few days.

Some may take longer, including:

  • Hotel stays
  • Car rentals
  • International purchases
  • Transfers
  • Deposits
  • Weekend transactions
  • Holiday transactions

Rankk cannot make a pending transaction clear faster. The merchant and financial institution control the processing time.

Pending transfers

A transfer may appear as pending while money moves between accounts.

For example:

  • $500 pending withdrawal from checking
  • $500 deposit not yet visible in savings

Your totals may briefly look unusual when one side of the transfer appears before the other.

Pending refunds

A refund may also appear as pending before it is completed.

The refund may not reduce your final spending total until the financial institution finishes processing it.

Why a category may change

A pending transaction may have limited merchant details.

Rankk may first place it in a general category and update the category after the completed transaction provides more information.

For example:

  • Pending category: Shopping
  • Completed merchant: Local restaurant
  • Updated category: Dining

What should I do if a pending transaction looks wrong?

First, compare the transaction with your financial institution’s app or website.

Check:

  1. The amount
  2. The merchant
  3. The date
  4. The connected account
  5. Whether another person with access to the account made the purchase
  6. Whether the transaction is an authorization hold

The merchant name or amount may become clearer after the transaction is completed.

If you believe the transaction is unauthorized, contact your financial institution immediately.

Rankk cannot cancel, block, refund, or dispute a transaction.

What if a transaction stays pending for too long?

Contact the merchant or financial institution when a transaction remains pending longer than expected.

They control when an authorization is completed, canceled, or released.

Rankk only displays the information available from the connected account.

What if a completed transaction is missing?

The connected account may still be updating, or the financial institution may not have sent the completed version yet.

Check:

  • When the account last updated
  • Whether the account needs attention
  • Whether the completed transaction appears at your financial institution
  • Whether it appears under a different merchant name or amount
