How does Rankk handle transfers between accounts?

A transfer moves money from one account to another. Because both accounts can report the same movement, a transfer may appear as two transactions in Rankk.

Why does a transfer appear twice?

Each connected account reports its own side of the transfer.

Moving $500 from checking to savings

Leaving checking: −$500

Entering savings: +$500

These are two records of the same transfer, not two separate expenses.

Do transfers count as spending or income?

Rankk tries to identify transfers so they are not counted as regular spending or income. This prevents money moved between your own accounts from making it look like you spent or earned more than you actually did.

Moving $1,000 from checking to savings should not count as $1,000 of spending or $1,000 of new income. Your total cash has not changed.

Common types of transfers

  • Checking to savings
  • Savings to checking
  • Credit card payments
  • Loan payments
  • Transfers to investments
  • Transfers between banks
  • Money moved through Venmo or PayPal

Some payments can look similar to transfers, so Rankk may need enough transaction information to identify them correctly.

How are credit card payments handled?

A credit card purchase and a credit card payment are two different transactions.

  1. You spend $100 at a store using your credit card.
  2. The $100 purchase counts as spending.
  3. You later pay $100 from checking to the credit card.
  4. The payment is treated as a transfer, not another $100 of spending.

This prevents the same purchase from being counted twice.

Why might a transfer be categorized incorrectly?

  • One side of the transfer is missing
  • One of the accounts is not connected
  • The amounts or dates do not match
  • The financial institution provides limited details
  • The merchant name is unclear
  • The transaction is still pending

For example, if your checking account is connected but your savings account is not, Rankk may only see the money leaving checking.

Review a transfer that looks wrong

Open the transaction and review:

  • The amount
  • The date
  • The account
  • The merchant or description
  • Whether another connected account shows the matching transaction

A matching amount entering another account around the same date usually means the transaction is a transfer.

What if a transfer affects my totals?

If a transfer is counted as spending or income, first wait for any pending transactions to finish processing. The matching side may not have appeared yet.

If both transactions are completed and the totals still look wrong, contact Rankk support. Please include:

  • The accounts involved
  • The transaction amounts
  • The transaction dates
  • Whether each transaction is pending or completed
  • A screenshot, if helpful
