How Does Rankk Identify Income?

Rankk reviews deposits and other money entering your connected accounts to help identify your income.

What may count as income?

Income is money you receive that increases the amount available to you.

Common examples include:

  • Paychecks
  • Freelance or contract payments
  • Business income
  • Government benefits
  • Pension payments
  • Interest earned
  • Dividends
  • Rental income
  • Other recurring deposits

For example, a direct deposit from your employer may be identified as paycheck income.

The exact details Rankk receives depend on your financial institution, Plaid, or another supported connection service.

How Rankk identifies income

When money enters one of your connected accounts, Rankk reviews the available transaction information.

This may include:

  • The transaction name
  • The sender or company
  • The amount
  • How often the deposit appears
  • The connected account
  • Information provided by the financial institution
  • Whether a matching transfer appears in another account

Rankk uses these details to decide whether the transaction appears to be income, a transfer, a refund, or another type of deposit.

Income is different from a transfer

Moving your own money between accounts is not new income.

For example, moving $1,000 from savings to checking may appear as:

  • $1,000 leaving savings
  • $1,000 entering checking

The deposit into checking should not count as $1,000 of income because the money was already yours.

Rankk tries to match both sides of the movement and treat them as a transfer.

Income is different from a refund

A refund returns money from an earlier purchase.

For example, returning a $75 pair of shoes may create a $75 deposit on your credit card or bank account.

That deposit should normally reduce your spending instead of counting as new income.

The transaction may first be difficult to identify if the merchant name or original purchase details are unclear.

Why income may be identified incorrectly

A transaction may be placed in the wrong group when:

  • The transaction description is unclear
  • The sender name is shortened or unfamiliar
  • One side of a transfer is missing
  • The deposit is still pending
  • A refund does not clearly match the original purchase
  • The financial institution provides limited details
  • A payment app deposit could be either income or a transfer

For example, a $500 deposit from a payment app could be freelance income, repayment from a friend, or money transferred from another account.

Rankk may not always know the purpose from the transaction name alone.

How recurring income helps Rankk

Correctly identified income helps Rankk understand how much money regularly comes in.

This can improve tools that help you:

  • Review monthly cash flow
  • Build a budget
  • Plan for upcoming bills
  • Understand how much may be safe to spend
  • Track savings progress
  • Create financial goals
  • Ask Rankk AI questions

For example, Rankk may compare your expected income with upcoming bills and recent spending when helping you plan the rest of the month.

Why monthly income may change

Your income total may change from one month to another because:

  • You received an extra paycheck
  • Your paycheck amount changed
  • A bonus or commission was paid
  • Freelance income changed
  • A deposit was reclassified
  • A pending deposit became completed
  • An account had not finished updating

For example, someone paid every two weeks may receive three paychecks during certain months instead of two.

This can make that month’s income look higher even when the regular paycheck amount stayed the same.

What if an income transaction is missing?

First, check whether the deposit appears in your financial institution’s app or website.

Then check:

  1. Whether the deposit is still pending
  2. When the connected account last updated
  3. Whether the account needs to be reconnected
  4. Whether the deposit appears under another transaction name
  5. Whether Rankk identified it as a transfer or refund

What if income is being counted incorrectly?

Open the transaction and review its:

  • Name
  • Amount
  • Date
  • Connected account
  • Current category
  • Pending or completed status

If Rankk allows transaction editing, choose the correct category and save the change.

If the transaction cannot be corrected or several deposits are being identified incorrectly, contact Rankk support.

Include:

  • The transaction name
  • The amount and date
  • The connected account type
  • Whether it should be income, a transfer, or a refund
  • A screenshot, if helpful

Do not include your password, verification code, or full account number.
