What is the difference between current and available balance?

Your current balance and available balance can be different because they measure two different things.

Current balance

Your current balance includes transactions that your financial institution has completed and added to the account.

Example

Current balance
$1,500

Pending card purchase
$120

The $120 purchase may not be included in the current balance yet because it is still pending.

Available balance

Your available balance is the amount your financial institution says is currently available to spend or withdraw.

Example

Current balance
$1,500

Pending purchase
−$120

Available balance
$1,380

The available balance is lower because the pending purchase has already been set aside.

Why the balances may be different

Your current and available balances may be different because of:

  • Pending purchases
  • Deposits that have not cleared
  • Card authorization holds
  • Scheduled payments
  • Bank fees
  • Credit limits
  • Payments that are still processing

The exact calculation depends on your financial institution and account type.

Checking and savings accounts

For checking and savings accounts, your available balance may be lower than your current balance when money is being held for a pending purchase or withdrawal. It may also be lower when a recent deposit is still being reviewed.

Example

Current balance
$2,000

Recent check deposit
$500

Amount available now
$1,700

Your bank may not make the full deposit available right away.

Credit card accounts

Credit cards may show several different numbers, including:

  • Current balance
  • Statement balance
  • Available credit
  • Credit limit
  • Minimum payment
  • Amount due

Example

Credit limit
$5,000

Current balance
$1,200

Available credit
$3,800

A pending purchase may lower your available credit before it is added to your current balance.

Why the balance in Rankk may not match your bank

Rankk shows the balance information provided by your connected financial institution through Plaid or another supported direct connection.

The numbers may briefly look different when:

  • A transaction is still pending
  • Your account has not updated yet
  • Your institution sends one balance before another
  • A deposit or payment is still processing
  • Your bank uses a different balance type

The financial institution’s app or website is the best place to confirm the exact amount currently available to spend or withdraw.

Which balance does Rankk use?

Rankk may use the balance provided by your financial institution that best matches the account and feature being shown. For example, Rankk may use account balance information when calculating:

  • Cash balances
  • Debt totals
  • Net worth
  • Available funds
  • Monthly budgets
  • Financial forecasts
  • Rankk AI answers

The balance used may depend on the account type and the information your financial institution provides.

What should I do if the balance looks wrong?

First, compare the balance in Rankk with the balance shown by your financial institution.

  1. Check whether there are pending transactions.
  2. Check when the account last updated.
  3. Refresh or reconnect the account if Rankk says it needs attention.
  4. Wait for recent payments or deposits to finish processing.
