How Rankk Finds and Tracks Subscriptions

Rankk reviews transactions from your connected financial accounts to help identify charges that appear to repeat.

What may count as a subscription?

A subscription is a repeating payment for a product, service, or membership.

Common examples include:

  • Streaming services
  • Music services
  • Cloud storage
  • Software
  • News and media
  • Fitness memberships
  • Meal plans
  • Delivery memberships
  • Gaming services
  • Professional tools
  • Other recurring memberships

For example, a $14.99 streaming charge that appears every month may be identified as a monthly subscription.

How Rankk identifies recurring charges

Rankk reviews the available transaction information from your connected accounts.

This may include:

  • The merchant name
  • The amount charged
  • The transaction dates
  • How often the charge appears
  • The connected account
  • The transaction category
  • Information provided by Plaid or another supported connection service

Rankk looks for charges that appear to follow a repeating pattern.

For example:

  • January 8: $12.99
  • February 8: $12.99
  • March 8: $12.99

That pattern may be identified as a monthly subscription.

A subscription does not always charge on the same date

Recurring charges may move slightly from month to month.

This can happen because of:

  • Weekends
  • Holidays
  • Different month lengths
  • Merchant processing times
  • A billing date change
  • A delayed transaction update

For example, a subscription may charge on the 15th one month and the 16th the next month.

Rankk may still recognize it as the same recurring payment.

Subscription amounts may change

Not every recurring charge has the exact same amount each time.

The cost may change because of:

  • A price increase
  • Taxes
  • Usage-based billing
  • A promotional period ending
  • A plan change
  • An added service
  • A currency conversion
  • A temporary discount

For example:

  • Previous monthly cost: $9.99
  • New monthly cost: $12.99
  • Increase: $3.00 per month

Rankk may use recent charges to update the expected subscription cost.

Monthly and yearly subscriptions

Some subscriptions charge every month.

Others may charge:

  • Every week
  • Every three months
  • Every six months
  • Once per year
  • On another repeating schedule

A yearly subscription may be harder to identify until enough transaction history is available.

For example, a $119 charge that appears once each year may eventually be identified as an annual membership.

The amount of history available depends on your financial institution and when the account was connected.

How subscription costs are estimated

Rankk may use the latest recurring charge and its billing schedule to estimate the subscription’s ongoing cost.

For example:

  • Monthly charge: $15
  • Estimated yearly cost: $180

Or:

  • Annual charge: $120
  • Average monthly cost: $10

These calculations help you understand both the immediate payment and the longer-term cost.

An estimate may change if the merchant changes the price or billing schedule.

Upcoming renewals

Rankk may estimate when another payment is likely based on the earlier transaction pattern.

For example, if a service usually charges near the 10th of each month, Rankk may show an expected renewal near that date.

An upcoming date is an estimate until the merchant sends the actual charge.

The date may change because of the merchant, billing schedule, or transaction processing time.

Why a subscription may not be found

A subscription may be missing when:

  • The account used to pay it is not connected
  • The account has not updated
  • There is not enough transaction history
  • The merchant name changes
  • The charge amount changes often
  • The subscription was recently started
  • The transaction is still pending
  • The charge does not follow a clear pattern
  • The financial institution provides limited details

For example, Rankk may not identify a yearly subscription until the account provides enough history to show that the charge repeats.

Why a normal purchase may look like a subscription

A repeated purchase is not always a subscription.

For example, you may regularly shop at the same grocery store or order from the same restaurant.

Rankk may need to separate regular habits from automatic recurring payments.

A charge may be harder to identify when:

  • The amount changes every time
  • Purchases happen on irregular dates
  • The merchant sells both subscriptions and regular products
  • The transaction details are unclear

Review the transaction history when something is incorrectly shown as recurring.

Merchant names may look different

The merchant shown in Rankk may not exactly match the brand name you recognize.

A subscription may appear under:

  • The company’s legal name
  • A parent company
  • A payment processor
  • An app-store billing name
  • An abbreviated transaction name

For example, a subscription purchased through an app store may show the app-store company instead of the individual service.

App-store and bundled subscriptions

Subscriptions purchased through Apple, Google, PayPal, or another payment service may appear under that payment provider.

One app-store transaction may also include more than one service.

Check your app-store purchase history or merchant account when you need the exact plan details.

Rankk can only organize the transaction information provided by the connected financial account.

Free trials

A free trial may not appear in Rankk until the service creates a financial transaction.

If the trial has not charged your connected account, Rankk may not be able to see it.

Review trial dates directly with the merchant so you know when a paid subscription may begin.

How subscriptions affect your spending

Subscription payments are part of your spending.

They may appear in categories such as:

  • Entertainment
  • Bills and utilities
  • Software
  • Fitness
  • News and media
  • Other services

Several small subscriptions can become a larger monthly or yearly expense.

For example:

  • Video streaming: $18 per month
  • Music: $12 per month
  • Cloud storage: $10 per month
  • Fitness app: $20 per month
  • Total: $60 per month
  • Estimated yearly cost: $720

Viewing the full total can make the long-term cost easier to understand.

Subscriptions and your monthly budget

Recurring subscriptions should be included in your budget when they are expected during the month.

For example, if you pay $85 each month across several services, leaving those charges out could make your remaining budget or safe-to-spend amount look higher than it should.

Does Rankk cancel subscriptions?

Rankk helps you identify and review recurring charges, but cancellation must be completed directly with the merchant or the service used to purchase the subscription.

The merchant controls:

  • Cancellation
  • Refunds
  • Plan changes
  • Billing dates
  • Pricing
  • Trial terms

Rankk cannot guarantee that stopping a card payment ends the agreement with the merchant.

What if I do not recognize a subscription?

Open the recurring charge and review:

  1. The merchant name
  2. The amount
  3. The connected account
  4. Earlier matching transactions
  5. The transaction date
  6. Whether the charge is pending or completed
  7. Your app-store or online purchase history

Check whether another person with access to the account signed up for the service.

If you believe the charge is unauthorized, contact the financial institution that holds the account.

Rankk cannot dispute or reverse the transaction.

What if the subscription information looks wrong?

Review the recent charges for that merchant.

Check whether:

  • The amount recently changed
  • The merchant name changed
  • The charge is pending
  • One payment appears twice
  • The billing schedule changed
  • The account has not updated
  • A regular purchase was mistaken for a subscription
