How to calculate net worth

Net worth is the value of what you own minus what you owe.

Net worth = assets − liabilities

To calculate your net worth, add up the current value of your assets, then subtract all outstanding debts. The amount left is your personal net worth. For a more detailed breakdown, see how net worth is calculated.

What counts as an asset?

Assets are things you own that have financial value. When calculating net worth, include the current value of cash, investments, retirement accounts, real estate, vehicles, and other property you could reasonably assign a value to.

Common assets include:

  • Checking and savings accounts
  • Investments and brokerage accounts
  • 401(k)s, IRAs, and other retirement accounts
  • Homes and other real estate
  • Vehicles
  • Other valuable property

Use current estimated values rather than what you originally paid.

What counts as debt?

Debt, or liabilities, is money you still owe. These balances are subtracted from your assets when calculating net worth.

Common liabilities include:

  • Mortgages
  • Credit card balances
  • Student loans
  • Auto loans
  • Personal loans
  • Other outstanding debt

Use the amount you currently owe, not the original loan amount.

What does a negative net worth mean?

A negative net worth means your total liabilities are greater than your total assets.

This can happen when someone has student loans, a large mortgage, auto debt, or other balances that outweigh the value of what they currently own. As debt falls and assets grow, your net worth can increase.

Is my net worth good for my age?

Whether your net worth is good for your age depends on how it compares with other households at a similar stage of life. A net worth that is strong at age 25 may be much more typical at age 55.

Use Rankk’s net worth percentile calculator to estimate where your net worth ranks among U.S. households around your age. Your percentile is best used as a benchmark, not a target. Income, housing costs, debt, family size, and location can all affect what a strong financial position looks like.
